Brittany Dixon was walking through the western part of Burleigh National Park on Australia’s Gold Coast when she spotted a young koala exploring the woodlands from a perch atop its mother’s back on August 14.
Dixon posted the video to Instagram with the caption, “I think this is the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me…Wait for the wink.” She “stopped on the spot” when she saw the pair walking toward her.
Burleigh National Park supports a large population of the marsupials. Dixon told Storyful, “The fact that the koala had a baby on her back means they’re breeding in this area which is an encouraging discovery for koala protection.” Young koalas often cling to their mother’s back or belly during their first year.
