Koala Recovers After 'Life-Saving' Surgery at Victoria Sanctuary
A koala has made a full recovery after “life-saving” surgery to remove a thyroid cyst, Zoos Victoria said.
According to Zoos Victoria, Hazel the koala had developed a thyroid cyst “the size of a large egg” on her windpipe, which was causing “discomfort” and “impacting her ability to chew on eucalyptus leaves.”
Healesville Sanctuary vet Dr Chloe Steventon said it was difficult to detect the cyst because koala thyroid glands are located closer to their chest, unlike in humans or in dogs and cats, where the gland is typically mid-neck.
“The procedure was very delicate. However, we’re pleased to report she has made a full recovery and is back to chewing on eucalyptus and napping,” Zoos Victoria said. Credit: Zoos Victoria via Storyful
