Kraft opens 'buy now pay later' shop to help US workers during government shutdown

Kraft foods is opening up a store in the US in which federal workers can “buy now and pay later” as the government shutdown continues.

The store will be open for four days in Washington DC and will be open to people holding government ID.

Workers will be handed a bag full of Kraft products. In return, they are asked to pay it forward by donating to charity once they are financially able to do so.

Sergio Eleuterio, head of marketing for Kraft: “Kraft stands for families and we want to support the families who have built our brands.

“This store is one way we can help those affected get the grocery staples they need. And we celebrate all who are doing their part to help.”

An estimated 800,000 government workers are impacted by the government shutdown and many in the Washington DC area as the federal government is the largest employer.

The government shutdown is now the longest ever and is now in its 27th day.

President Donald Trump has refused to approve a budget unless it includes funds for his long-promised wall on the Mexican border.

But Democrats have rejected his request for $5.7bn (£4.5bn).

Mr Trump and nervous Republicans have been scrambling to find a way out of the deadlock, which has left federal workers without pay.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has signaled moral opposition to the wall and vowed to oppose any funding, said the president is seeking to divert attention from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation and other White House problems.

"This isn't a wall between Mexico and the United States. This is a wall between his failures of his administration," Ms Pelosi told reporters. "This is a big diversion, and he's a master of diversion."
