Kurt Cobain's Cardigan From MTV: Unplugged 1993 Show Sells For £93,000

If you made an unsuccessful bid for the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s cardigan at auction… Nevermind.

You saved £93,000 ($140,000), because that’s how much it fetched at a recent rock memorabilia sale in California.

The cardigan in question wasn’t just any Cobain cardigan: it was the one worn by Cobain for Nirvana’s legendary MTV: Unplugged performance in New York in 1993.

The item of clothing was sold by Julien’s Auctions in a sale that also included items belonging to The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson.

Cobain’s cardie sold for about double its initial asking price and was described by Julien’s as “a blend of acrylic, mohair and Lycra with five-button closure (one button absent), with two exterior pockets, a burn hole and discoloration near left pocket and discoloration on right pocket”.

Cobain wore it during the MTV: Unplugged show, one of Nirvana’s most famous performances. The resulting live album won a Grammy award for best alternative album.

In 2006, one of Cobain’s guitars sold for $131,000. In 2008, another Cobain guitar fetched $100,000.

Cobain’s cardigan was a steal, however, compared to John Lennon’s once lost acoustic guitar, which sold for $2.4 million (£1.7 million) at the same auction.
