Kyiv Zoo Welcomes Bouncing Baby Guanaco

The Kyiv Zoo in Ukraine has welcomed an energetic new female to their herd of guanacos – the wild ancestor of the domesticated llama – footage from January 26 shows.

Footage recorded by the zoo shows little Lucia, a two-week old guanaco calf.

The Kyiv Zoo wrote on Facebook that: “Her mother, Raquel, does not leave her, and her one-year-old sister, Christy, and her father, Ricardo, takes care of them 24 hours a day.”

A guanaco is a camelid native to South America. The species is classified as critically endangered in Peru and vulnerable in Chile due to overgrazing by domesticated livestock. Guanaco calves are called chulengos. Credit: Kyiv Zoo via Storyful
