Liverpool's position in the race for Kylian Mbappe has always been on the periphery.

PSG's star man was always destined to depart the club at the end of the season having failed to accomplish his ultimate target of winning the Champions League. It had also become unsustainable for the French club to keep him around considering the influence he held at the football club.

Mbappe once insinuated he had discussed a move to Liverpool because of his mum's support for the football club. However, Jurgen Klopp quickly shot down any suggestion the Reds would sign him under Arne Slot when he declared they did not have the finances available.

However, while Slot will not be awarded the welcome present of a World Cup winner, Mbappe could help Liverpool sign a player who will be just as important. In recent days, the Reds have been linked with a move for Real Madrid's Rodrygo.

The Brazilian is facing an uncertain future at the club having freely admitted this week that he would be open to leaving the Bernabeu for the right offer. Rodrygo's position in the Spanish capital will become even more perilous if Mbappe arrives.

The 23-year-old has been used as a centre-forward mostly for Real this season but should Mbappe join the club, as is expected, Rodrygo will be bumped out of the team. Vinicius Jr will expect to remain on the left flank which opens up the possibility that his international teammate could be used on the right but Madrid will likely need to sell one member of their forward line to make room for the in-demand free agent.

Should this happen, Rodrygo looks to be the prime candidate to depart which should leave Slot in the perfect position to pick up the ideal candidate to replace Mohamed Salah moving forward. Before the Egyptian departs, Rodrygo could also bolster an attack that is under scrutiny after Darwin Nunez's indifferent performances.

But to pull off this big move in the summer transfer window, Liverpool will need to wait for Mbappe to make the first move and hope the dominos fall in line from there onwards.
