Kylie Jenner has come under fire for throwing her friend a Handmaid’s Tale themed birthday party.

The 21-year-old Keeping Up With The Kardashians star was accused of celebrating misogyny with the elaborate dinner party which saw the all-female guests dressing in the white bonnets and red cloaks worn by handmaids in the hit show starring Elisabeth Moss.

Jenner organised the party for her best friend Anastasia Karanikolaou and both women are huge fans of the show.

But the TV show, based on the book by Margaret Atwood, is set in a dystopian future where handmaids are essentially female slaves held prisoner by the elite and subjected to ritualised rape in order to bear children for their infertile mistresses.

Narrating a video showing the lavish party decorations Jenner said: “The Handmaid’s Tale is my favourite show ever so for Stassie’s birthday welcome to Gilead.”

And showing the guests in their costumes she squealed: “Look at my girls.”

Guests at the party greet each other with the show’s catchphrases, “Praise Be,” and “Under his eye,” and were treated to themed cocktails, Praise Be Vodka and Under His Eye Tequila.

Twitter users branded Jenner “tone deaf and “ignorant” for her choice of theme.

One wrote: “Kylie Jenner throwing a Handmaid’s Tale themed bday party is top-tier ignorance and privilege.”

And many could not believe it wasn’t actually a joke.

Comedy writer Brittany Van Horne tweeted: “Kylie Jenner throwing an extravagant Handmaid's Tale-themed party feels like something a hack sketch writer would've come up with.”
