New Labour MP Laura Pidcock says she won't 'hang out' with female Tories because they are the 'enemy'

A new Labour MP has said she would not “hang out with Tory women” because she considers them an “enemy”.

Laura Pidcock, who at 29 is one of Britain’s youngest female MPs, made the remarks in an interview with Refinery29.

Ms Pidcock said she would not “hang out with Tory women” who she said are “no friends of mine” and “an enemy to lots of women”.

The Labour MP for North West Durham said she instead found reassurance in a WhatsApp group with other Labour MPs.

Ms Pidcock was criticised by for her comments by Conservative MP Nadine Dorries, who tweeted: "She will make a great MP. How can she fail with her politics of hate and such a hands over the ears juvenile attitude".

In the same Refinery29 article, new Conservative MP Kemi Badenoch disagreed with Ms Pidcock, saying: “I have family members who vote Labour. If you’re in a position where all the people you know think and look like you, you have a problem.”

She said some Labour MPs “genuinely believe that we [Conservatives] are vermin.”

Writing on Facebook in response to the criticism, Ms Pidcock said: “Just to be clear, I represent everyone regardless of who they voted for. I don't ask and don't care who people voted for if they need help from us, they will get it.

"I have reached out to the Tory MPs several times already and also asked them to sign my letter asking for a pause to Universal Credit, no response.

"Of course I will work with a Tory if it is going to benefit the people in my constituency, my point was that I have not intention of being their friends. We are ideological opponents.

"It would be disingenuous to suggest I can happily sit there and have light hearted chat with people who are ambivalent to the suffering of my constituents, any relationship is purely functional."
