A labrador puppy has somehow survived after swallowing a 45cm-long pole from a toy windmill.

The dog stripped the masts from the toy while playing in the family garden then ate the rest of the windmill whole.

X-rays show the windmills along almost the entire length of the puppy.

The vet who treated the dog said it was ‘most bizarre’ item he had ever removed from an animal.

Despite the dangerous-looking nature of what had been swallowed, vet Ben Garland said the dog did not appear to be in any pain.

‘He’d chewed the sails off and had somehow been able to swallow the remainder,’ the vet told the East Anglian Daily Times newspaper.

‘He was OK - a little bit dribbley but otherwise fine. He didn’t appear to be in much pain, just a little bit bewildered.’

The windmill mast was removed in a delicate operation which involved making an incision to the dog’s oesophagus.

The dog was kept under watch by the vets for two days following the operation before it was allowed to return home.

The vet added that dogs were prone to swallowing unwanted objects as they had a tendency to ‘explore the world through their mouths’ and had a poor gag reflex.

The dog has made a full recovery.
