We have some sad news, Little Monsters: Lady Gaga will not be returning to American Horror Story this season.

Mother Monster has been a fixture of the last two seasons of Ryan Murphy's horror anthology series, having ostensibly stepped in for Jessica Lange as leading lady for Hotel.

For last year's American Horror Story: Roanoke, Gaga had a smaller but extremely pivotal role as the forest demon Scathach, as part of the show-within-a-show format.

The politically-charged upcoming seventh season seemed like a natural fit for the outspoken Gaga, and there was speculation among the American Horror Story fan community that she'd been cast.

However, Entertainment Weekly has since clarified that Gaga will not be a part of the seventh season because of her commitments to other projects - likely the big-screen remake of A Star Is Born.

Ryan Murphy has already described this year's theme as being a reaction to the election of Donald Trump – and it won't just be the Trump presidency providing the jump scares. Murphy has released some concept art for a very… err, handsy… new monster:

Murphy also has a typically exciting cast lined up for the next American Horror Story too, with veterans Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters as well as newcomers Billie Lourd, Billy Eichner and Colton Haynes all signed up.

American Horror Story's seventh season will premiere this autumn - just in time for a creepy theme park tie-in to open.
