Lake Superior Glistens as Icy Waves Lap Wisconsin Shore

Icy waves were filmed lapping the shores of Lake Superior near the town of Ashland, Wisconsin, on December 3 as frosty weather swept the northern United States.

This footage, shot by local photographer Cheryl Koval, captures the ice crystals bobbing on the surface of the largest lake in the Great Lakes system, glistening in the late fall sun.

Despite the cold weather, the region is experiencing warmer-than-average temperatures due to a La Niña weather phenomenon.

“Many of us might be thinking the latest weather is a bit odd for this time of year,” the National Weather Service said in a tweet.

“La Nina climatology suggest that above average temperatures in the fall are typical, but followed by a quick pattern shift in December to chillier weather.” Credit: Cheryl Koval via Storyful
