The casting for the movie adaptation of young adult novel To All the Boys I've Loved Before has been announced – and Lana Condor will play the lead role.

The actress, recently seen as Jubilee in X-Men: Apocalypse, will play Lara Jean Covey, a teenager who finds one day that all of her old, super-secret, and unsent love letters to her past crushes have been unexpectedly delivered, throwing her life into chaos.

Janel Parrish of Pretty Little Liars and Anna Cathcart are playing Lara's sisters Margot and Kitty respectively, which means the film will not be short of Asian American characters.

Hurray!

Even better, the movie is penned by Sofia Alvarez and being directed by Susan Johnson, a rare project which is both written and directed by women.

The novel was written by Jenny Han, and she expressed her delight at the fact that the lead characters are Asian American.

"I'm over the moon," she wrote. "The most important thing for me as the author is seeing an Asian American girl in the starring role, and with this movie, we get to see not one but THREE! That is truly groundbreaking.

"I haven't seen Asian American women centred on screen since Joy Luck Club, which was nearly 25 years ago.

"Representation is so important, and this means the world to me. More than anything, I hope that the success of this movie will lead to more opportunities for Asian American actors and writers down the line."

The Angry Asian Man blog, ran by Phil Yu, claims that Han "fought hard to make sure the movie versions of Lara Jean and her sisters were cast with Asian actresses".

John Corbett is playing the sisters' father, while Noah Centineo and Israel Broussard are portraying Peter Kavinsky and Josh Sanderson respectively, love interests of Lara.
