A Lanarkshire mental health charity received a welcome boost this month as the UK celebrated Mental Health Day with a £1,000 donation from the Alona Hotel.

Based in Newarthill, You Are My Sunshine (YAMS) was founded in 2018 by Rhonda Jones, a former Scottish international footballer and currently a Watch Commander in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

The hotel, which overlooks Strathclyde Country Park, has supported the charity for the past two years through various activities including hosting fundraising events.

Jensen Taylor Connelly, Alona Hotel director, said: “YAMS provide the most fantastic support, literally a lifeline for so many people and we’re delighted to have been able to support them.

“Our partnership has enabled our teams to become more aware and understanding of mental health which touches us all at some point in life.”

Rhonda Jones, YAMS founder added: “We have been honoured to partner with The Alona Hotel and M&D’s over the past two years. Like us, Jensen and her team have a desire to better mental health support and awareness, and we have been fortunate to utilise their facilities and resources to help us drive this forward.”

YAMS provides free support to people across Scotland with mental health difficulties, assisting around 4,000 people each year.

The charity was set up by Rhonda and her family, in memory of her sister Gemma Jones who experienced mental health challenges and sadly passed just before her 30th birthday.
