Lanarkshire politicians visit Thorntonhall's proposed Battery Farm site to hear constituents' concerns
Lanarkshire politicians have visited the proposed site for a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Thorntonhall to hear constituents' concerns.
Their visit comes ahead of the formal planning permission process, which will allow the local community to have their say on the plans.
The site, located at Meikle Dripps Farm on Waterfoot Road, covers approximately 5.7 hectares of agricultural land.
It is the proposed location for a 150 MW BESS, which would be developed by Apatura and submitted for planning approval by AAH Consultants to the Energy Consents Unit (ECU) and Scottish Ministers.
During the visit, both Joani Reid, East Kilbride MP and Monica Lennon, Central Scotland MSP listened to the concerns of local residents, who expressed anxiety about the potential noise impact and fire risks associated with the battery storage facility.
The nearest residential properties are 29 flats, located 215 metres from the proposed site.

The Labour politicians emphasised the importance of proper consultation, thorough safety assessments, and transparency in the planning process.
They reassured constituents that the relevant authorities, including South Lanarkshire Council, would be responsible for considering all concerns raised, and would carefully evaluate the potential impacts on local communities.
Joani Reid MP commented: “This is a big issue for the people of Thorntonhall. I encourage everyone to make their voices heard during the formal consultation period. It is vital that all potential impacts, including noise and fire risks, are carefully assessed.”
Monica Lennon MSP added: “It’s vital that all community concerns in Thorntonhall are heard and properly considered. I urge everyone interested in this scheme to take part in the formal consultation period so that their views are considered before a final decision is made.”
The consultation process will provide further opportunities for people and organisations to submit their feedback before the planning application is formally reviewed by the appropriate bodies.
Ms Lennon and Ms Reid said they are "committed to supporting constituents" to ensure that their concerns are addressed throughout the process.
