A hotel in Gloucestershire hopes to expand and increase its number of bedrooms. The Charlton Boutique Hotel, just off the A40 in Charlton Kings, currently has 12 bedrooms and wants to build a three-storey annexe for an additional 32 bedroom.

The hotel is one of the first buildings seen by people heading west towards Cheltenham on the A40 London Road from the Oxford direction. It is just within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

A revised planning application, prepared by Coombes Everitt Architects has now been submitted to Cheltenham Borough Council, reducing the proposed number of bedrooms down from 40 to 32. The project aims to increase guest accommodation capacity; upgrade hospitality facilities; improve the hotel layout and operational efficiency; retain as much of the external landscaping as possible.

The design and access statement says: "The owners intend to undertake a refurbishment and development of The Charlton Kings Hotel, Cheltenham, which provides visitor accommodation on the border of Cheltenham. The proposals seek to improve the hotel’s business structure which is currently based around a 12 bedroom capacity.

"The proposals look to address this with a renewed approach that will help ensure this local business asset is improved and sustained long term. The proposed scheme looks to refurbish and extend the existing hotel building as well as providing new development to improve the quality and capacity of facilities.

"This aims to provide additional high standard visitor accommodation and cater for visiting and local business function uses." It adds that ad-hoc additions to the existing building would be removed with new extensions more in keeping with the existing building.
