Four prestigious apartments in Bath have been brought to the market by Savills. No.1 Sion Hill Place is the superb redevelopment of an important Grade I listed Georgian building in the World Heritage city of Bath.

The substantial double-fronted property was designed by John Pinch the Elder in 1818 and expanded in the 1930s to incorporate the façade of a John Wood the Elder house, meticulously reconstructed stone by stone. Its interior was redesigned in 1936 for Ernest Cook, grandson of travel pioneer Thomas Cook, using elements from Chesterfield House, Westminster, once the residence of Princess Mary.

Situated on the upper slopes of Bath, the six-storey property was one of the city’s finest residences for over a century before becoming home to a private school. Now, the building has been converted into a collection of luxurious apartments, offering contemporary living within a historic setting.

The original entrance to the building leads to a grand hall with an exquisite stone cantilever staircase at its centre. There is also a lift from the ground to the third floor – a rarity in period conversions.

The two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments are individually designed to make the most of the building’s original features, which include high ceilings, ornate cornicing and mouldings, cast iron radiators and large sash windows, while introducing high quality fixtures and fittings, such as free-standing baths, quartz countertops and walk-in showers.

Encompassing spacious floor plans of between 1,535 sq. ft. and 2,651 sq. ft. the apartments also benefit from expansive south-facing views over arboretum-like grounds and surroundings.

Hunter Harling is marketing the apartments on behalf of Savills Bath. He said: “Designed by John Pinch the Elder as a grand country house in the heart of the city, No.1 Sion Hill Place is magnificent building, more than deserving of its Grade I listed status.

“Its redevelopment has been undertaken with the utmost sensitivity and commitment to excellence, resulting in a collection of apartments that epitomise the best in contemporary comfort and period grandeur. There is nothing else like this scheme in the Bath market, and, having already attracted a number of enquiries prior to launching, I anticipate a high level of interest.”
