In the 2011 season, Landon Donovan scored 12 goals in the regular season and three in the postseason. For awhile, he was in the running for the Golden Boot. However, injuries and other commitments kept him out of the race. Still, over the course of the season, he made some amazing goals and helped lead his team to the MLS Cup Championship. These are my top five picks.
After a throw in, Landon Donovan and Chad Barrett combined for some quick passes. Despite being surrounded by defenders, Donovan easily beat keeper Eric Krongberg. Donovan's brace in the game helped the Galaxy post a 4-1 victory over SKC.
David Beckham sent in a corner and Donovan jumped above the Fire's Gonzalo Segares for the header equalizer. Considering the midfielder is only five foot eight, he did a good job in the aerial battle. Unfortunately, the Galaxy lost 2-1 to the Fire.
After a scoreless first half, Sean Franklin gave the "over the top pass" to the Galaxy midfielder. Then, it was just Donovan against keeper Joe Cannon. Staying composed, he chested it down and ripped a shot into the upper half of the goal. Later, Donovan scored a penalty kick for the 2-0 lead. The Galaxy came up with a 4-0 victory.
During the game against FC Dallas, Juninho hit a sharp diagonal cross to the back post. Donovan and Zach Loyd rushed to the ball, but the Galaxy captain got there first. In the process of scoring, Donovan slid into the post to make the equalizer. Despite the goal, the Galaxy lost 2-1.
Who could forget this goal? It was the only goal of the night. It featured all three of the Galaxy's Designated Players. More importantly, it enabled the Los Angeles Galaxy to take the MLS Cup title. After Beckham flicked a header towards the goal, Keane made his way through traffic before passing it to Donovan. The Galaxy captain made a perfectly timed run and then one-touched it into the back of the net. This was, by far, Donovan's best goal of the season and a great way to cap off the year.
I'm definitely looking forward to 2012 and more Landon Donovan goals.
