A road in Somerset has been closed after a landslip. Somerset is still dealing with the aftermath of Storm Bert, which ripped through the South West over the weekend, which caused multiple roads to flood, felled hundreds of trees and has now blocked a road with mud and debris.

Eggwood Hill, between Merriott and Lopen, is closed, Somerset Council said today, Tuesday, November 26. Photos show a chunk of land fell into the road, blocking it in both directions. The council said clear up is being organised for "as soon as possible" but that the road has been shut in the mean time.

Travel Somerset, social media account for Somerset Council, said: "Travel update: Eggwood Hill between Merriott and Lopen is closed due to a landslip. A clear-up operation and further assessment of the area is being organised as soon as possible."

Storm Bert hit the country on Saturday, November 23, with four separate weather warnings for ice, snow, rain and wind issued throughout the week. On Monday, crews removed more than 200 trees which had been blown across roads, including the B3227 in Norton Fitzwarren and the A30 Hendford Hill in Yeovil.

Teams from the Somerset Council’s contractor Kier dealt with 644 reports of incidents on the roads across Somerset during and after Storm Bert. There are still 18 flood alerts in place on Tuesday morning, ahead of more rain expected to fall tonight.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste, said: “This has been a challenging few days for our teams on the ground with hundreds of incidents to deal with – they’ve been out around the clock throughout the weekend and today and we’re incredibly grateful for their efforts.

“There are a number of road closures remaining in place and there may well be smaller roads across the county which are flooded or which are blocked by fallen trees. Please don’t attempt to navigate flooded roads. If it’s safe to do so and you’re able to, please report any issues you come across and our teams will deal with them as quickly as possible.

“We’re aware the impact on Yeovil in particular has been significant today with both the A3088 and A37 affected, we are grateful to the local community and road users across Somerset for their patience and support.”
