Lane Kiffin threatens to pay $25K SEC fine with pennies, struggles with math
On Monday, the SEC fined Lane Kiffin $25,000 for complaining about officiating.
It then admitted that Kiffin’s gripe was legitimate.
Kiffin is understandably frustrated.
The Mississippi football coach responded by threatening to pull a classic page out of the playbook of the fined and aggrieved — paying his bill in pennies.
Where can I find 25,000 pennies??

Wait a second — 25,000 cents isn’t $25,000. Obviously.

That’s better.
Wait, nope. That’s not it either.

There you go. The math looks right on that one.
Was just checking to see if @SEC would review my math to get it right this time??? After future review it’s 2.5 million pennies. Thanks for stopping to get it right 👍💰🔥 https://t.co/zvWvWw0GFk

Oh, OK. We see what you’re doing there, Lane. Well played. Well played, indeed.
Why was Kiffin mad to begin with?
So what is Kiffin so irked about? Besides the five-figure hit to his bank account, that is.
On Saturday, officials missed what looked like an Auburn turnover on a fourth-quarter Mississippi kickoff when running back Shaun Shivers touched the ball before Ole Miss players recovered it in the end zone.
Instead of a Mississippi touchdown, officials ruled that Shivers didn’t touch the ball and awarded Auburn a touchback. They did not review the play. Auburn went from trailing 28-27 at the time of the disputed play to a 35-28 victory.
After the game, Kiffin retweeted this.
Y'all are a disgrace @SEC your officiating is absolutely atrocious. @SECOfficiating
If y'all want to just keep gifting Auburn wins, just say it. pic.twitter.com/LJ01avk5ZI— Breck Jones (@BreckJones_) October 24, 2020
SEC: We screwed up, but ...
In a statement on Monday, the SEC admitted that officials should have stopped the game for further review. They also announced that Kiffin owed them $25,000 for his tweet “in violation of Conference Bylaws and Commissioner’s Regulations that govern Sportsmanship and communication with the Conference Office on officiating issues.”
So if you didn’t know why Kiffin wants to roll into the SEC office like this guy:
Now you know.
And Kiffin might be just the coach to follow through with the threat.
Stay tuned.
