Large police presence discover 'explosion' at Smulders yard in Wallsend was firework thrown over fence

Police rushed to a production facility in North Tyneside after a firework was thrown over the fence.

A large police presence, which reportedly included around 15 cars, attended Smulders yard in Wallsend at around 2.30pm on Thursday after concern was raised about an item being thrown over the fence.

A staff member told Chronicle Live how there was an "explosion" and they were prevented from entering or leaving the premises on Hadrian Way for around an hour.

Northumbria Police investigated and discovered that a firework had been thrown over the fence.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Shortly before 2.30pm on Thursday (September 5), it was reported that an item had been thrown over the fence of a premises on Hadrian Way in Wallsend. Officers attended the scene where they soon established the item in question was a firework, and there was no wider threat to the public."
