A massive retirement village of nearly 150 new homes has been approved for an Essex town. The new village will consist of 144 homes close to an underground station in Chigwell.

Retirement Villages Group has won planning permission from Epping Forest Council to build the homes near the Grange Hill underground station. The group said the community will be "sustainable and purpose-built " and exclusively for people over 65 from the area.

The company said the new Chigwell village will be part of the "Thrive Living" collection, designed for older people to feel part of a "wider urban community", with access to all the facilities and energy of town centres to enable them to live active and sociable later lives, while also having any support they may need close at hand.

Residents will be able to enjoy a resident lounge and a library, with selected facilities such as the restaurant open to the wider community, creating a "welcoming and inclusive environment".

Retirement Villages Group said the new village will be fully net zero carbon, powered by renewable energy, and include a 20 per cent increase in biodiversity. Other communities built by the company include complexes in Chester, West Byfleet and Tunbridge Wells in Kent.

Duncan Matthews, Development Director at Retirement Villages Group, said: “I would like to thank everyone involved in this approval. The outcome is a testament to months of constructive consultation with Epping Forest officers, local stakeholders, and the dedication of our consultant team.

"We’re thrilled to bring a vibrant, sustainable village to Chigwell, offering older people a community where they can live happier and healthier later lives. Our plans also include new jobs and amenities that will benefit and be accessible to the entire community."
