Large Waves Lap Over New Orleans Lakefront as Tropical Storm Barry Approaches

Tropical Storm Barry, which was expected to make landfall in Louisiana as a hurricane on Saturday, July 13, battered New Orleans with strong winds and storm surge on Friday evening as it approached the Gulf Coast.

This video shows waves splashing onto the walkway along the Lakefront.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm would bring “life-threatening storm surge inundation” along the southern and southeastern coast of Louisiana and parts of Mississippi, long-duration heavy rainfall, flash flooding and river flooding.

Mayor of New Orleans LaToya Cantrell called for the voluntary evacuation of residents in areas outside of levee protection, and for others to shelter in place by 8 pm Friday. Credit: pcdunham via Storyful
