Large 'Willy Willy' Forms in Exmouth, Western Australia

A large dust devil, known locally as a “willy willy”, formed in Exmouth, Western Australia in October, towering over Amanda Dawe, who filmed this video.

The dust devil was seen whirling around, reaching metres into the sky, before collapsing on a dirt road outside the Harold E. Holt Naval Communication Station in North West Cape.

The footage, which was posted to Facebook, caught the attention of Aussies from communities all over.

“Exmouth has lot’s of those willy willys,” one former resident said in a comment on Facebook. “I lived with them for 3 1/2 years…they loved to go straight through my lovely clean washing on the clothes line”.

“I have seen a few over the years we have spent ‘out bush’, and I reckon this would have to be one of the best!” another said. Credit: Amanda Dawe via Storyful
