A traditional pub is calling time on smartphones - by asking customers to hand in their mobiles in return for a free drink.

The Number Fifteen boozer in Pemberton, Greater Manchester, has made the offer in the hope of reviving traditional conversation and ending ‘Facebook culture’.

Bar manager Sam Sheridan said: 'We notice that at weekends, the younger customers play on their phones the whole time and spend half an hour taking photos etc.

'People are not chatting as much as they did several years ago. We just want people to be more sociable and interactive.'

He added: 'Customers can bring their own instruments and perform, like the merry old times when people sat around a piano to entertain themselves.

'It is just a bit of fun and all about encouraging people to be social again.

‘This has been going on for almost a month and it is going down well. We will keep this offer up until the summer.'

The no-phones offer is available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

While the good news is that you’ll get a free drink for turning your phone in. The bad news for ‘traditional drinkers’ is the drink in question in a free shot of Skittles-infused vodka in return.
