The final episode of Gavin and Stacey is set to bring back a major character for the Christmas special. James Corden and Ruth Jones, the creators of the popular comedy, are reportedly in discussions with one of the show's most iconic guest stars.

Sheridan Smith, the actress, is said to be in "informal discussions" about reprising her role as Ruth 'Rudi' Smith. A source revealed to the Sunday Mirror: "The script for Gavin & Stacey: The Finale includes all of the show's major players - including Smithy's sister Rudi.

"Nothing has been signed and conversations are still very much ongoing - especially as the filming date has not been set.

"But all of the stops are being pulled out to make sure the whole cast are there, and in the coming weeks the production team hope to pin down everyone's availability."

"Sheridan and James are still friendly - they recently bumped into each other at the Variety Club Awards and got on really well. So the hope is that she will be able to be part of it."

Sheridan's character was absent from the 2019 Christmas special, but it is hoped she will return for the show's grand farewell.

Gavin and Stacey, a hit BBC sitcom, was co-created and written by James and Ruth, who also played Smithy and Nessa, the best friends of the main couple Gavin (Matthew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page).

The series aired from 2007 to 2010, with its first Christmas special broadcast on BBC One in 2008.

However, it made a comeback nearly ten years later with a Christmas special in 2019.

Fans were thrilled to see their favourite characters back on TV, but the episode ended with a significant cliffhanger.
