It entered 2018 having just passed the $1 billion mark at the US box office, so we're not in the least bit surprised to learn that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now officially the 10th highest-grossing movie of all time.

Very successful film, it is.

As per Box Office Mojo's figures, The Last Jedi managed to push last year's Disney hit Beauty and the Beast out of the top 10 with takings of almost $1.3 billion.

Of course, The Last Jedi is still languishing behind its predecessor, The Force Awakens, which is the third highest-grossing movie of all time after taking over $2 billion.

Not that this is something for Disney to worry about, mind – as the franchise's latest episode has helped push Star Wars ahead of Harry Potter on the cash front.

Over the span of all its movies, Star Wars has now taken in $8.55 billion (£6.32 billion) globally, forcing itself past Harry Potter's $8.53 billion (£6.30 billion).

Despite its box office and critical success, some die-hard Star Wars fans have got a bee in their bonnet about director Rian Johnson's 'convenient' use of astral projection techniques.

Luckily, Rian is on hand to prove his detractors wrong, and recently hit back at fans who questioned the introduction of Luke Skywalker's greatest mind trick.

"I should stay out of this but... were ANY aspects of force use in the OT (force grabbing objects, force ghosts, even the jedi mind trick) explicitly 'set up' before they happened?" he asked.

That's them told.
