The villain of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kylo Ren, divided fans over whether he was awesome and layered or an whiny and unimpressive emo.

Whichever side of the coin (or the Force) you fall on, it looks like Ben Solo's dark alter ego is going to become much more unstable, and therefore dangerous, in The Last Jedi.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, director Rian Johnson said Adam Driver's character has "definitely been knocked off base."

"The defeat that he had at the end of The Force Awakens, but even bigger than that, his huge defining act which, spoiler alert, is the murder of his father… that's the more interesting thing to dive into.

"How has he dealt with that in his head? Where is he at in terms of that act and what does that mean for him?"

The director also said that Ren's character arc is representative of the journey of adolescence.

"Kylo represents kind of the rebellious anger that you feel during that period.

"Honestly, sometimes it's a healthy desire to push away from the place that you know, from the things that you came from. But he obviously does it in an extreme that's not healthy at all."

In the same interview, Johnson also talked about Han Solo's metaphorical ghost and Captain Phasma getting some action.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released in UK cinemas on December 14 and US cinemas on December 15. Watch a trailer below:
