More than a year after the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens there remain two major questions that The Last Jedi has to answer: 'Who are Rey's parents?' and 'Is Supreme Leader Snoke a character we've met or heard about before?'

(Ok, three questions if you include 'When will Finn and Poe get together?')

Fans have come out with endless compelling theories about the leader of the First Order, with the newest one spotlighting a major character that has been making his presence known in the Star Wars novels.

Gallius Rax is a machiavellian Imperial admiral who features in the Aftermath trilogy of books by Chuck Wendig, which are set after the events of Star War: Return of the Jedi.

Rax was born on Jakku and enlisted as a young man to be the protege of none other than the future Emperor, Sheev Palpatine.

In the first two books (the third, Aftermath: Empire's End is out in February), Rax operates under the codename Operator, playing off the New Republic and the remaining Empire leadership in order to take control of the Imperial forces.

He was last seen putting the finishing touches to his coup, and we know that from the ashes of the Empire will rise Snoke's First Order.

Snoke claimed to have seen the rise and fall of the Empire, which is also true of Rax.

Also, Rax's relationship to the Sith lord Palpatine (or Darth Sidious, if you prefer) would explain Snoke's apparent knowledge of the Force. Palpatine actually sensed his presence as a stowaway when they first met, which might indicate that Rax has Force powers of his own.

The greatest criticism of this theory is Snoke's tall, gaunt and not altogether human appearance, but Rax could still experience a transformation in Empire's End to explain that.

It certainly beats the theory that Snoke is Mace Windu...

Our biggest concern is actually whether Disney would be willing to reveal Snoke's identity before The Last Jedi is released, but perhaps the upcoming book will leave it ambiguous.

There's clearly a new willingness to cross-pollinate between the films, cartoons and books, as demonstrated by Forest Whitaker's appearance as Clone Wars character Saw Gerrera in Rogue One.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will answer all our questions (hopefully) on December 15.
