The Last of Us boss teases spin-off possibilities

The Last of Us TV show has been a huge hit for HBO, with a second season on the way, but is there the potential for more from this post-outbreak world?

Speaking to The Wrap, the show's co-creator Craig Mazin talked about the possibilities of spin-offs, stating that he and Neil Druckmann haven't really talked about it just yet.

"We haven't talked about that specifically because we're so focused on just telling this main narrative," he explained. "I'm not against the idea of other shows that may draw from these characters or that world. I don't know how much more The Last of Us I personally would be able to do.

"I mean, these shows are so big, I'm sort of burning one of the precious few remaining decades I have on telling this story. But in principle, I have no issue with it whatsoever. And I'm sure Neil would be interested as well. If there was something that made sense, then I don't see why not.

"My great hope is that if there is anything like that, that it's done with as much care and respect and love as what we are applying to this series right now."

So from a creative standpoint, it looks like nothing is concrete at the moment, although Mazin has admitted he's unlikely to be involved in any spin-offs. From a business standpoint, HBO waited until Game of Thrones was over before heading into spin-off territory with House of the Dragon and multiple other shows that are all a bit up in the air at the moment.

Meanwhile, Mazin has recently spoken about the longevity of the core series, stating that the creative team currently see four seasons as optimum.

"It can end up being three or five. But four seems like a good number. Some seasons, because of the story we're telling, will need fewer episodes and some will need more. The best news is the audience wants more," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

The Last of Us airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK.
