The chilly conditions have been dubbed the "first taste of winter" by the Met Office. A new yellow weather warning of snow and ice in the North East - was issued by UK's national weather and climate service, encompassing Tuesday evening, overnight and during Wednesday morning.
The areas affected will be Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees and Sunderland.
