For all the teases, pictures, behind-the-scenes features and trailers we've seen from the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi so far, Laura Dern's character has remained a bit of a mystery.

In fact, one of the few things we do know about Dern's Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo is the fact she has a pretty fantastic hairstyle.

And now, thanks to a new picture of the character shared by Laura herself yesterday (October 18), we can confirm that Vice Admiral Holdo's hair is still purple – and still completely awesome.

Excited to talk a little Star Wars with my buddy @theellenshow today!!

Our first introduction to the character came from Vanity Fair in May, in which Vice Admiral Holdo was described as "a prominent officer in the Resistance".

Laura shared this new picture ahead of an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where she wasn't allowed to say much Star Wars-wise beyond the fact that she is in it, and was caught on camera making the 'pew pew' laser noises we all make while she was filming a fight scene.

According to director Rian Johnson, all this mystery over Laura Dern's character is actually happening for a reason.

"The secrecy does have a purpose, in that part of the fun with Laura's character with Admiral Holdo, is figuring out what her relationship is to everybody as you go along through the movie," Johnson teased back in August.

"I don't want to tip the hat too much, but I will say that the heat is immediately turned up on the Resistance. Everybody is put in a pressure cooker right away, and relationships crack and strain under that pressure."

It's also possible that Laura Dern's character could be the Star Wars franchise's first on-screen LGBT character after a passage from a prequel novel, Claudia Gray's Leia: Princess of Alderaan, features an exchange between Holdo and Leia that suggests as much, while also confirming that the relationship between Laura Dern and Carrie Fisher's characters goes back a long way.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on December 14 in the UK and December 15 in the US.
