Laura Dern made cute cartoon noises as her Star Wars character fired a gun in The Last Jedi, which was released digitally on Tuesday.

A Twitter user went viral after posting a GIF of Dern's character, Vice-Admiral Amilyn Holdo, using her pistol and exclaiming "pew" whenever she discharged the weapon.

In the commentary available on the DVD, director Rian Johnson explained: “You can see Laura Dern say 'pew' when she fires the gun, which she could never not do every time she shot it.”

While this is not new knowledge – as the Big Little Lies star admitted her actions last year – the tweet took social media by storm, with others pointing out she wasn’t the only star to revert back to her childlike self.

One wrote: “If I had a laser gun, I would say pew every time I shot it.”

While another pondered: “That's amazing. I wonder if the Stormtroopers did this under their helmets, like ‘WHOOOOOOSH’ ‘Pow, pow!’ ‘S***, I missed again’.

“Pew! Pew! Super adorable. Really, how could she not?” laughed somebody else.

Last August, Dern told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show that Johnson had actually pointed out the “embarrassing” story to her.

The actress said: “There is a moment where I get to have a space weapon in my hand and I guess that I didn't realize that I was back in my bedroom at eight years old, doing the scene.

“And I went, 'Pew! Pew!' as I was [firing]. They’ve taken the sound out, I don’t think you’ll hear that in the movie."
