Reports that Martin Odegaard will pen a new long-term Arsenal contract has really “excited” talkSPORT host Laura Woods.

Odegaard has been fantastic this season, scoring ten goals and providing seven assists in 27 Premier League appearances.

The Norwegian playmaker was named Arsenal captain in the summer and has taken on the responsibility to make the team his own and is leading an unexpected title push.

The Gunners are currently top of the Premier League, leading reigning champions Manchester City by eight points.

Mikel Arteta’s side are not in action until April due to the international break, but there are still plenty of rumours circulating, whether that be about contract extensions or potential transfers.

And Football Transfers reported on Monday that Odegaard will be rewarded for his fine form this term with a new contract lasting until 2030.

This news – although it might not be from the most reliable source, but any good news is obviously reliable to fans – has excited Arsenal supporters.

Included in that group is talkSPORT host Laura Woods.

Speaking on Tuesday morning, Woods announced the news, saying: “Arsenal are ready to offer Norway playmaker Martin Odegaard a new deal to keep him at the club until 2030.

“I’m very excited about this one.

“This is the thing about Arsenal, they have to make sure the best players re-sign and sign new deals and get them to commit their future to the club.

“There’s no better time to do that than right now when everything is amazing. He’s just so great and at the centre of everything. He’s such a leader.”

Her colleague and Rangers legend Ally McCoist then made a bold, but fair, claim that Odegaard is Arsenal’s most important player.

“I just think he might be the most integral player to that team,” McCoist added.

“I go on about the goalkeeper [Aaron Ramsdale], who has been great, and the two centre-backs [William Saliba & Gabriel Magalhaes].

“For the first time in a long time he’s got two centre-backs he can rely on. [Rob] Holding has come in and done very well.

“In the middle of the park you can argue [Thomas] Partey is as integral as any of them and Saka and the boys up front.

“But I just think [Bukayo] Saka is the one who keeps things ticking and moving along nicely.

“I really think he’s a terrific footballer.”

Odegaard is certainly an extremely crucial part of Arteta’s system and could be regarded as the heartbeat of the team.

Bukayo Saka has arguably been the club’s best player this season, however, providing his tenth assist of the league season and scoring twice during Sunday’s convincing 4-1 win over Crystal Palace.

If Arsenal win the league, it would be harsh if Saka or Odegaard do not win the PFA Player of the Year award, even if Erling Haaland has scored a ridiculous amount of goals.
