Lava Flow Reaches Sea on La Palma's West Coast

Eruptions continued at La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano on September 28, as local officials reported that lava had reached the sea on the island’s west coast.

The Canary Islands Volcanology Institute said late on Tuesday that lava flow had reached the sea at Playa Nueva.

Video shared by Spain’s Ministry for Transport, who said it was filmed by a maritime rescue crew, shows the lava flow.

Copernicus EMS said on Tuesday that satellite imagery indicated that some 589 buildings and 21 kilometers (13 miles) of roadway had been destroyed by volcanic activity since September 19. Credit: Salvamento Maritimo via Storyful
