Lava Flows Onto Newly Formed Headland Off Coast of La Palma

Lava continued to flow from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma on Friday, October 1, contributing to a new headland as it poured into the sea.

This footage released by Salvamento Maritimo, Spain’s public sea search and rescue agency, shows the lava’s interaction with the ocean.

Local officials had warned of the potential toxicity of emitted gasses for nearby residents who also experienced widespread damage. According to El Pais, lava flows destroyed about 1,000 buildings and were threatening 1,200 others by Friday. Credit: Salvamento Maritimo via Storyful
