Lava Fountains Form From Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii's Leilani Estates

At least 22 lava fissures have opened in lower Puna, Hawaii, since a May 4 earthquake near the Kilauea volcano. This video shows activity from fissure 5 in the Leilani Estates subdivision on May 23.

Big Island Now said lava fountains formed from fissures 5, 6, 13 and 19, which feed the lava flow west of fissure 22. The flows were expected to continue towards the ocean entry point by late evening.

Hawaii News Now said rivers of lava continued to threaten homes, with eruptions releasing dangerous gases. Lava entering the ocean was also creating high levels of gas, Hawaii Civil Defense said. Credit: Travis Sanders via Storyful
