The Harvey Weinstein scandal has had an earthquake effect on Hollywood and beyond, and it looks like narratives are already using it as a touchstone.

Law & Order: SVU is to address the scandal in an upcoming episode, with the episodes due to air in 2018.

However, the entirely fictional storyline will explore rape culture in the airline industry rather than Hollywood.

"We are hitting Harvey Weinstein head-on, but it's not in the realm of the entertainment business," executive producer Michael Chernuchin told Entertainment Weekly.

"It's a real important episode about the rape culture in an industry, and we wanted to try stretch the law to criminalize that sort of environment."

However, the episode was already being written before the Weinstein sexual misconduct scandal broke.

Chernuchin said: "We were actually working on a story about airline pilots and what a boys club that is.

"We were beating the story out and said, 'Wow, this is exactly what the actresses go through in Hollywood. It's the same environment.' So we got all of our Harvey stuff out with airline pilots."

It was confirmed last month that Weinstein was being investigated by both US and UK police after being publicly accused of misconduct by a number of actresses including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Cara Delevingne and Ashley Judd.

Through his attorneys, Weinstein has continued to deny "any allegations of non-consensual sex".
