After over a decade off-air, the anticipation is building for the return of Law & Order, joining the spin-off series Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Season 21 will pick up where it left off in 2010, with a host of new and familiar faces to welcome the long-running TV show back onto NBC.

There have already been several cast announcements as the old-guard return to their beloved roles. Sam Waterston will be reprising his iconic role as District Attorney Jack McCoy, joined by Anthony Anderson who returns as Detective Kevin Bernard.

In a recent interview with Variety, Waterston teased another returning favourite fans have to look forward to. "There is a person coming back in the first show, one of my favorite people on Earth. I’m not allowed to tell who that is, but you’ll be glad when you see her," Waterston explained.

The theories for who the returning star could be are already churning. Of course, there are some prominent female characters from the show's 20 season run who ended up relocating to other shows in the Law & Order fictional universe.

Most notably, Lieutenant Anita Van Buren (S Epatha Merkerson) who featured in 391 episodes, is now a series regular as Sharon Goodwin in Chicago Med. Meanwhile, Assistant District Attorney Connie Rubirosa (Alana De La Garza) picked up a role in FBI as Isobel Castille.

And while some characters such as Claire Kincaid (Jill Hennessy) and Alexandra Borgia (Annie Parisse) died during their run, there are countless other possible people Waterston could be referring to. After all, 20 seasons racks up many potential guest stars!

There will also be new faces, with Jeffery Donovan (Burn Notice) confirmed in a lead role as NYPD Detective. And, with the show airing at the end of February, there isn't long to wait to find out who the surprise guest star will be.

Law & Order season 21 will premiere on February 24 on NBC. Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays on NBC in the US. The show airs on Sky Witness in the UK, with select episodes available on NOW.
