TikTok is full of hacks for making more of your life smell like Le Labo Santal 33, from a similar-smelling hand soap to laundry detergent. All Le Labo scents seem to have a signature musk, but this one is a little bit spicy with notes of cardamom, a little bit floral with notes of iris and violet and has notes of smokey, woody and leathery sandalwood and cedarwood. The popular scent first gained a cult-like following in New York City nearly 10 years ago, but it still has the world in a chokehold.

Le Labo describes Santal 33 on its website as “an open fire…The soft drift of smoke…Where sensuality rises after the light has gone.” Make of that what you will.

It’s no secret that Santal 33 is expensive. A 1.7-ounce bottle is $215. Hence, if you like the smell but don’t want to shell out that kind of cash, it may be helpful to find something similar for less.

Tons of people on Sephora’s website claim that the Maison Louis Marie No.04 Bois de Balincourt Eau de Parfum smells just like it.

This scent is slightly smokey, slightly sweet.

“This smells exactly like Le Labo Santal 33. I know this because I already have Le Labo Santal 33. The fragrance is spot on. So if looking for a less expensive alternative to Santal 33, this one is it,” wrote one shopper in the reviews.

Maison Louis Marie’s perfume costs $93 for 1.7 fluid ounces, which is a lot more affordable than Le Labo’s. Not to mention, it’s vegan, free of parabens and phthalates and gets Sephora’s “clean” stamp of approval.

Maison Louis Marie is a French perfumery that dates back to the late 1700s, when founder Marie du Petit Thouars’ grandfather, a pioneer in French botanical history, brought over 2,000 plants from Madagascar to France. Using her family’s history as inspiration, Marie and her husband Matthew created their brand and are committed to creating clean, sustainable, luxury fragrances. Maison Louis Marie is climate neutral certified and is part of the 1% For The Planet organization. And its fragrances smell really, really good.

Nonetheless, some Sephora’s reviewers say that the Maison Louis Marie No.04 Bois de Balincourt Eau de Parfum smells like dill pickles. However, it’s not uncommon for perfumes to smell different on different people or smell different to others. Rest assured, there is no dill noted in this perfume’s description.

So if you want to smell slightly smokey and slightly sweet, give the Maison Louis Marie No.04 Bois de Balincourt Eau de Parfum a try.
