League 1 play-off winners receive trophy but slam RFL after medal snub
League 1 promotion hopefuls Hunslet have posted a statement confirming their disappointment at not receiving medals after last weekend’s play-off final victory. The Leeds-based side defeated Keighley Cougars 20-6 but have had to source their own medals after winning the contest.
The Yorkshire side face Swinton Lions this Sunday in a promotional final, with the Championship club aiming to avoid relegation. The RFL have confirmed that they will present medals should Hunslet win the fixture, but not after their victory over the Cougars.
"The club were disappointed to discover that the RFL did not provide medals for last Sunday’s play-off final," Hunslet CEO Neil Hampshire wrote in a club statement. “We will now source winners medals for all of our playing squad and coaching staff ourselves. We understand, however, that medals will be provided for Sunday’s Championship play-off game. One last push."
The lack of medals after Sunday’s game came despite an official trophy presentation to Hunslet after winning the League 1 final. They finished fourth in the regular season and defeated the Cougars at Cougar Park after tries from Ethan Wood, Mackenzie Turner, and Jack Render. Former Hull KR half-back Matty Beharrell kicked four goals.
Before that, Hunslet defeated Rochdale Hornets and Midlands Hurricanes. They will now face Swinton for a spot in the sport’s second tier, with a 7:30 pm kick-off scheduled.
Speaking to the club website, head coach Dean Muir believes the pressure is all on the Lions. "We knew about this route at the start of the season," he said. "There’s nothing better than Rugby League under floodlights, and with a sizable contingent of fans making the journey, it should be a great occasion.
"I’ve watched a lot of Swinton this year. They are a good side, and under coach Alan Kilshaw are very physical. Swinton are favourites, but if we make sure we are on the money, stick together, match them physically, and play to our style, we have a good chance."
He added: "It’s been a great season, but we want to play in the Championship. The pressure is on Swinton, not us."
