The League of Gentlemen has been off our screens since 2002 – but it's now been all but confirmed that the show is coming back for more!

Co-creator and writer Mark Gatiss has got fans talking with a tweet he sent out yesterday (April 22).

Gatiss received some praise from film director – and son of David Bowie – Duncan Jones, and he responded by dropping a whopper of a hint about the League's future.

Writing to Jones on Twitter, Gatiss said: "Hi @ManMadeMoon Thanks so much for your kind words Big fan. You may be pleased to know that we're planning a 'League' anniversary special!"

League of Gentlemen fans got very excited about this news, tweeting things like "I actually just got up to jump up and down once or twice. Best news of 2017!"

Another wrote: "Considering how you've all raised your profiles and proved yourselves outside the league, if you get the material right, it'll be big."

There's not been any other news about this potential anniversary special, but we'll be sure to keep our eyes peeled.

The League of Gentlemen ran from 1999 to 2002 on BBC Two and was written by Gatiss, Jeremy Dyson, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith.

The black comedy was set in a fictional northern town and focused on the lives of some very strange townspeople.

Shearsmith and Pemberton later collaborated again on dark comedies Psychoville and Inside No.9, while Gatiss has gone on to co-create and star in Sherlock.

While all the Gentlemen might be exceptionally busy these days, it looks like they're keen to make time to get back together for a one-off.

And we can't wait to find out more...
