At least 10 construction workers were killed when a bridge they were building 60 miles from the Colombian capital Bogotá collapsed.

Civil defence authorities said the labourers were working on drainage when the structure fell down.

Nine people were killed at the scene and a tenth worker died later at a nearby hospital. At least four others were injured.

Authorities were investigating how many people were working on the bridge when it collapsed and if anyone was missing.

The bridge, in Chirajara on the highway from Bogotá and Villavicencio, was not yet in public use.

The cause of the collapse, which sent pieces of the bridge down into a canyon below, is under investigation, said Reinaldo Romero, head of disaster response for Meta province.
