As the golden hues of autumn arrive, so does the chill, which can often leave our homes feeling dreary and unwelcoming.

With winter just around the corner, creating a serene sanctuary becomes essential for one's mental health.

Rob Chadwick from CGC Interiors explains that the shades we surround ourselves with can deeply influence our emotions, noting, "Colour psychology can play a big part in our emotional responses, and the colours in your home could lead to you feeling sad or withdrawn. Think about bringing in warm and brighter colours to counter the dark grey days."

He specifically points out that vibrant yellows and oranges are key to fostering a joyful atmosphere. Beyond just paint choices, he encourages incorporating these uplifting colours into home accents such as throw pillows and cozy blankets.

"Soft yellows and warm oranges are colours often associated with happiness, so experiment with these shades with pillows, blankets and lampshades; to bring warmth into your home," Chadwick recommends, reports the Express.

The interior expert has offered valuable advice on combating the gloom of the colder seasons with four tips aimed at brightening up your living space.

Use natural light

One vital suggestion is to maximise exposure to daylight during shorter days.

"As the nights draw in and the sun sets earlier, it can often feel incredibly dark and depressing," cautions Chadwick.

He advises, "Open your curtains and blinds fully during daylight hours to let the natural light in, and position furniture nearer to windows so you can embrace the natural light to the fullest."

"For more lighting, use mirrors to bounce light around the room and make the room feel bigger."

Embrace the outdoors

"As temperatures cool down and force us to spend more time indoors, it's important to still spend time in nature. Whilst there aren't any proper substitutes to being in fresh air, indoor plants are a great place to start," he continued.

"Incorporate plants and flowers into your home to help uplift your surroundings and add an aesthetically pleasing and functional touch to your decor."

Create a snug retreat

"Cosy spaces to escape to when the darkness of autumn kicks in is a great way to retreat to a safe space on darker evenings. They are the perfect space to settle down and enjoy a hobby or some reading."

"Whether it's a window seat or a comfy chair and a blanket, adding candles and diffusers with uplifting scents can change the mood of the room almost instantly."

Opt for soft materials

"Creating a cosy, safe atmosphere is a great way to help combat feelings of lowness."

"Place thick rugs on floors of natural materials like wood, stone or tile creates a nice juxtaposition between the hardness of the floor and the comfort of the rug."

"Purchase blankets and cushions and place them on your sofa so you have a space to settle down on an evening to be both cosy and comfortable."
