At Least Two Killed as Huge Crowds 'Loot' Government Food Warehouse in Suburb of Abuja, Nigeria

At least two people were reported to have been killed as huge crowds “looted” a government warehouse storing food in the Gwagwalada area of Abuja, Nigeria, on October 26, according to local media.

Vanguard reported that “many people were stabbed, some fainted in the commotion, while several others were injured” during the melee.

Video shows bags piled high in a warehouse, with people climbing and throwing the bags to a large crowd below, who carry them away. Further video shows crowds walking toward and entering a warehouse, while some people are throwing items out of the windows to people waiting outside.

The warehouse reportedly contained “COVID-19 palliatives” made up of “bags of rice and cartons of noodles, cartons of milk and tinned tomatoes,” among other things, Vanguard said.

Violence in the country has continued since the shooting of unarmed protesters at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos, on October 20, according to the Premium Times. Credit: @martins_olams via Storyful
