Leeds United announce 12th summer departure as transfer budget gets welcome boost

Leeds United have confirmed the departure of Charlie Cresswell to Toulouse. The centre-back has joined the French top-flight side for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £3.8m.

Cresswell initially pulled the plug on the move to France at the 11th hour. The 21-year-old had been on the other side of the Channel last weekend for talks with the Ligue 1 outfit after they had agreed a fee with the Whites. The defender eventually felt it was not to his liking and reported for pre-season at Thorp Arch last week.

But Toulouse revived their transfer interest in the player and have finally managed to get the deal over the line. The move comes less than 12 months after Cresswell signed a four-year contract at Elland Road. He found regular game time hard to come by under Daniel Farke as Joe Rodon quickly established himself as the club’s premier centre-back after arriving on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

Cresswell joins a growling list of players to leave Elland Road as Farke looks to reshape his first team squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. A United statement read: "Leeds United can confirm Charlie Cresswell has today joined Toulouse FC in a permanent deal, for an undisclosed fee.

"The central defender will immediately head to the French Ligue 1 side, bringing an end to his long-term associaton with the Whites, having progressed throughout our academy age groups.

"The 21-year-old made his first team debut in September 2020 in the League Cup, before then going on to make his Premier League debut in September 2021. Overall, he made 14 appearances across all competitions.

"After recently spending time away on loan from Elland Road and with first team opportunities limited, Cresswell will now continue his career at Stadium de Toulouse.

"Charlie leaves with the best wishes of everyone at Leeds United and we thank him for his contributions to the club, both on and off the pitch."
