While the Dominican Republic kicks off its bid for Olympic gold in Nantes later this month, Leeds United are expecting to see Junior Firpo training with them in Germany. The 27-year-old’s inclusion in his birth nation’s squad for the Olympic Games drew quizzical looks at Elland Road.

As the Olympics are not a part of the official FIFA calendar, clubs are under no obligation to release their players for the tournament. Mateo Joseph was another United name that had been mentioned as a candidate for the Spain squad, but he was not ultimately included in their squad list after a directive from Daniel Farke.

United are understood to have sent the same message to the Dominican Republic, but it was either not received or ignored because Firpo has been included by Ibai Gomez. The left-back’s country begins on July 24 in Nantes against Egypt before clashes with Spain in Bordeaux on July 27 and Uzbekistan in Paris on July 30.

While those games are being played, Farke is expected to be leading a crucial training camp for his squad in Germany, where two friendlies have been arranged. There are also clashes with Harrogate Town and Valencia on either side of that trip to the continent.

In blocking Firpo’s release, he will play a key role in those friendlies and has already been seen taking a full part in pre-season at Thorp Arch. Firpo was in from day one despite his previous international commitments with the Caribbean island in June.

As it stands, Firpo will share left-back duties with Sam Byram again next season as the only natural options in that position for Farke to choose from.
