Fans think Leeds United have cursed an out-of-form Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen after more disappointment in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Verstappen has not won any races in his respective sport since before July 9, the day he held up a Leeds United home shirt accompanied by Whites' skipper Ethan Ampadu and several other players.

Fans weighed in with their opinion with one commenting: "Looks like the Leeds United shirt might've thrown a spanner in the works for Vertappen's winning streaks." Another added: "And Will Ferrell will now make a movie that fails miserably." With a third saying: "This is the Leeds United I fell in love with."

Of course, the remarks were made with 'tongue in cheek' but nonetheless the photograph has provided entertainment for fans on social media. Verstappen could only muster a fifth-place finish in last week's Italian Grand Prix in Monza and his fortunes did not improve on Sunday afternoon in the Azerbaijan capital city of Baku as he finished fifth.

Oscar Piastri held off the challenge of Charles Leclerc to win the race, with George Russell third and Lando Norris fourth. Verstappen recently spoke about his football allegiance, he told Form: “ Kevin de Bruyne gave me his City t-shirt. He said, 'I hope you don't mind'. He knows that in the Premier League, I support Manchester United!”

Previously it was thought he supported Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven, speaking to Formule1.NL, he said : “That started with my father when he was sponsored by Philips. At that time he was regularly invited to PSV matches and sometimes I accompanied him. Gradually a certain bond grows, a click, and you can also associate yourself with that club.

“PSV emotionally suits me better than, say, Ajax. The Amsterdam mentality is different from the Eindhoven warmth. And Limburg is of course also closer to Brabant, in terms of distance. But also in terms of mentality.”
