Leeds United player ratings as Manor Solomon slip punished in Burnley loss
Leeds United suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday. Luca Koleosho scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 defeat.
Farke did not make any changes to the team that defeated Hull City two weeks prior to the game. That implied that, despite his late departure from the USA in the early hours of Wednesday morning domestically, Brenden Aaronson was prepared to stay in the team.
Additionally, it meant that following their club transfers last month, Largie Ramazani, Ao Tanaka, and Isaac Schmidt would have to wait to make their official debuts. It was Manor Solomon's second consecutive start.
The visitors led at the end of the first half. Koleosho scored the goal after running the entire length of the pitch after Solomon slipped, taking advantage of Jayden Bogle's indecision and Illan Meslier's shoddy attempt at a save.
The second half saw no further goals. Leeds tired to ask questions, but Burnley were comfortable defending deeply and repelled anything that came their way. Leeds looked blunt in the main.
Leeds United (4-2-3-1)
1 Illan Meslier
Arguably could have done more with Luca Koleosho's goal. More could have been done to close down the winger, but when it came to the bread and butter of the shot, Meslier may not like the replays. Seemed to be a lot of goal for the attacker to aim at. Nervy early moment for the stopper with distribution too, but broadly decent enough. 5
2 Jayden Bogle
Caught between a rock and a a hard place when it came to the opening goal. Virtually on his own with two attackers to marshal as they bore down on goal. Hindsight will say he should have closed down Koleosho sooner. Gave him too much time and space to shoot at goal. Passing was a little astray at times too, gifting Burnley good opportunities. Offered an option in attack. 5
6 Joe Rodon
Didn't put a foot wrong. Whenever he was asked to exert himself to meet the Burnley challenge, he did so without too much fuss. A lot of the game was played in the other half. 6
5 Pascal Struijk
Like Rodon, he was never really caught out by the visitors. Got his head on a couple of set-pieces that didn't test James Trafford. Caught out, like many, by the Manor Solomon slip which left Leeds out of shape at the back. 6
3 Junior Firpo
Kept offering an option down the left and got forward to support Solomon, but not a lot came off for him. Never really exposed defensively. 6
4 Ethan Ampadu (c)
Combative and scrapped with Josh Brownhill all afternoon. Tried some neat passes into the final third, but they didn't always come off. Presented with a number of shooting chances on the edge of the box because of Burnley's deep block, but, as we know, Ampadu's finishing is not his strength. 6
44 Ilia Gruev
Didn't see much of him as he popped up here and there in the middle. Not much of an influence in defence or attack. 5
29 Wilfried Gnonto
Really smart run in the first half gifted him a great chance at close quarters, but James Trafford was out to smother him. The odd dribble, but didn't really have the answers to hurt Burnley. 6
11 Brenden Aaronson
Crafted the pass that found Gnonto's aforementioned run. American was bright with and without the ball. Finding confidence with his distribution around the opposition box. 6

14 Manor Solomon
Very unfortunate to slip when he did in what proved to be the decisive moment of the match. Otherwise, he looked like United's best player in attack. Speed of feet and thought will hurt a lot of opponents this season, but today's visitors just about had answers to all of his questions. 6
19 Mateo Joseph
Will rue what proved to be the hosts' best chance of the match when it fell for him in the opening 50 seconds. While Burnley converted theirs, the youngster put his opportunity wide. Occupied defenders thereafter, but nothing really fell for him in a crowded box. 5
