Leeds United are set for a busy summer in the transfer market, both in terms of incomings and outgoings, as they look to win promotion to the Premier League. After narrowly missing out on promotion by losing 1-0 to Southampton in last month's play-off final, Daniel Farke's men have been made the bookmakers' favourites to win the Championship title next season.

But their near promotion miss comes with some consequences and Leeds will have to sell some players this summer to ensure they comply with PSR regulations, and to balance the books of a squad which contains several players that are still on Premier League level wages.

The likes of Crysencio Summerville, Ilia Gruev and Wilfried Gnonto could be sold this summer as a result and Leeds will have to ensure they replace the goal void left by the Dutchman, in particular, should he leave this summer.

Summerville has been linked with the likes of Brighton, Liverpool, Newcastle and Crystal Palace this summer and scored 21 goals and registered 10 assists in Leeds' run to the play-off final. And while he doesn't play in the same position, a move for Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics could help to fill that goal void should Summerville leave Elland Road this summer.

The Republic of Ireland international plays predominantly in the number 10 role but can also be used as a centre-forward. The 28-year-old scored 33 goals in all competitions last season and finished as the top goalscorer in both the Championship and the FA Cup.

He still has two years remaining on his deal at Ewood Park, though, and a deal to prise him away from Lancashire is likely to be expensive. Leeds are known to be interested in the former Peterborough United star but they are set to face competition from a number of big clubs.

According to bookmakers, Sky Bet, Leeds are currently joint third favourites to sign Szmodics. Premier League clubs Everton and West Ham United, who have both been credited with an interest in Szmodics, are 4/1 joint favourites to sign him ahead of Leeds. Turkish giants Galatasaray have been made 5/1 second favourites to sign Szmodics and, crucially, can offer him Champions League football next season after they won the Turkish Super Lig title.

Leeds and Nottingham Forest have been made joint third favourites to sign the Rovers star at 8/1, while Brentford, Ipswich Town and Leicester City are priced at 10/1. A move to any Saudi Pro League clubs is priced at 16/1.

Speaking at the end of the season, Szmodics revealed it is his dream to play in the Premier League and hopes his form at Blackburn this season has earned him the chance for a move this summer. “I’d like to think so [I could make the step up to the Premier League], but it’s about getting that opportunity and chance to do so,” revealed Szmodics to Sportsboom.com.

“But hopefully I’ve shown people who doubted me in the Championship what I can do and that I can make that step up and do it at that level. We’ll have to see what the future holds. It’s everyone’s dream to play in the Premier League – and hopefully I can achieve that.”

Leeds may not be able to offer Szmodics Premier League football next season but if they can convince him to help fire their promotion charge next season, they may well help him realise his dream long term.
