Leeds United transfer rumours with 'check' made on departing Tottenham man

Leeds United are scouring the free agents market as Daniel Farke looks to strengthen his first team squad ahead of the 2024/25 season. Wholesale changes are not required and the Whites have already demonstrated they have the nucleus of a team capable of challenging for automatic promotion.

But Farke will be eager to bring in new faces to increase competition for places before the summer transfer window closes to give them the best possible chance of a Premier League return. A lack of strength in depth in one or two key areas arguably cost them at the back end of last year as Ipswich Town pipped them to second spot.

Left-sided player Ryan Sessegnon is believed to be on United's radar following his release from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. A HITC report says the Whites are among multiple clubs in England and abroad to have enquired about the possibility of signing the 24-year-old.

Sessegnon, who will officially leave Spurs when his contract expires at the end of the month, has been out of the picture at North London since suffering a hamstring injury in November 2023. He featured just once for Tottenham last term.

Although Sessegnon's career has stalled in recent years, it seems he is not short of suitors. West Ham United, Rangers, Fulham, Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, Real Betis, Monza, Como and Atalanta are all believed to have checked in on Sessegnon's situation.

The HITC report adds that West Ham have ‘made enquiries’ about a possible deal for Sessegnon. New Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui is keen to make his mark on the Hammers squad and add more competition for Emerson Palmieri at left-back, with back-up option Aaron Cresswell only a bit-part player last term.

Sessegnon, who can operate as a wing back or a winger, was previously rated as one of English football’s best young prospects when he left Fulham for Tottenham in a deal worth £25m in 2019. A raft of fitness issues limited him to just 38 appearances in Spurs colours.

United, who will begin their 2024-25 Championship season against Portsmouth at Elland Road on August 10, currently have Sam Byram and Junior Firpo in the full-back positions. It remains to be seen whether Jamie Shackleton will extend his Whites stay, having been offered fresh term.
